Meditating Laying Down

People are often surprised to hear that I prefer to meditate laying down. Many have been told that it’s not good to meditate from this position because if you are too comfortable, you could fall asleep. Although it’s true that this sometimes happens, I like to feel comfortable when I meditate, and laying down feels best, as does being under the covers where it’s warm. At the beginning of my practice, I had a tendency to enter a deep state that felt similar to sleep, except that I came out with a greater sense of calm and wholeness that I rarely felt upon waking from sleep. To meditate effectively, I do not believe that you have to be strict. You don’t need to hold postures or sit in positions that feel uncomfortable or unnatural. If you're cold, sit under a blanket. If the floor is too hard, sit on a soft chair. Try laying in a bed and if you fall asleep every time, try sitting up in the bed. Continue to try different approaches until you discover what works best for you.
