Max & Gumbo
Max & Gumbo
My grandmother Iris, who is 96 years old and an award-winning poet, and I created this children's paperback. Devious Doings is a story for children of all ages about Max, a little boy from New Orleans, and a bird who appeared while Max was eating his grandmother's gumbo. Max and the little bird become inseparable, and somehow, they can communicate with each other. Max lovingly names the bird "Gumbo," and together, they explore the mystery of the wind: what it is, where it comes from, how it hides, and the enormous power it seems to yield over all things, near and far.
